» The Yes Men Fix the World
Known as The Yes Men, Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno have garnered worldwide fame for punking global capitalism. Fix the World documents their greatest hits, like speaking at an energy expo to propose using human corpses as a power source. The pranks range from leaden to hilarious: a highlight is the "Survivaball" -- personal protective gear that makes the wearer look like a giant swollen tick (and that made appearances during Pittsburgh's G-20). The Yes Men, who also direct, come off as a bit too self-satisfied -- a hazard of making a documentary about yourself -- but they're clear-eyed about how much change their pranks bring about. (Answer: not much.) Fri., Jan. 22-Sun., Jan. 24. Melwood (Chris Potter) [2.5 out of 4 stars]

» The Road
Initially, the premise -- a father and son trying to survive in a world devastated by nuclear war -- seems oddly out of date. But at the heart of John Hillcoat's film, based on Cormac McCarthy's searing novel, is a feeling many of us share: Somewhere over the horizon, somebody is readying bombs that can destroy our way of life. That's the backdrop for The Road's ill-clothed characters and deliberately threadbare plot, as they wander southward through the ruins, seeking warmer climes, food and shelter from marauding cannibals. Their moments of tenderness between father (Viggo Mortensen) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) defy the devastation around them, and are made more poignant by it. The film's ending is a shade more optimistic than the book's. But for bean-counting purposes, Hillcoat probably remained too true to the original. How many audiences, after all, will watch a 108-minute movie whose first 106 minutes mostly suggest that where there's life, there's hopelessness? (Chris Potter) [3 out of 4 stars]
